A Celebration of Blues & Soul: The 1989 Inaugural Concert, will air on Chicago’s PBS station WTTW HD on Saturday, March 8, at 8pm. The concert was originally recorded during George H.W. Bush’s live presidential inaugural concert event and presumed lost for more than 20 years after the death of Lee Atwater, a political advisor of both Bush and President Ronald
Stevie Ray Vaughan
“PBS viewers are in for a once-in-a-lifetime musical treat,” says Joyce Moore, who was one of the concert producers. “This broadcast of the concert originally called A Celebration for Young Americans is especially significant because it contains truly magnificent performances from brilliant American icons we have since lost — Billy Preston, Willie Dixon, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, Duck Dunn, Lafayette Leake and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was an honor and the thrill of a lifetime to have been part of and associated with this inaugural event when it occurred in 1989.”
The four-hour special features nearly 20 minutes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who is joined on stage by brother Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins and Ron Wood. The concert also featured appearances by Sam Moore, Bo Diddley, Percy Sledge, Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, Carla Thomas and Joe Louis Walker.
The video was found six years ago. The original, recorded with seven cameras and a separate 24-track audio recording, has been restored, remastered, color-corrected and converted to HD. The audio also has been remixed to a 6-channel, 5.1 format.
