Paolo Apuli is a Chicago-born Filipino-American singer-songwriter and blues musician whose sound is as heartfelt as it is powerful. Known for his smooth, crystal-clear vocals and expressive guitar work, Paolo seamlessly blends the soul of blues with the intimacy of songwriting to deliver performances that resonate deeply with audiences.
After years of performing as a solo acoustic artist, Paolo returned to his musical roots, diving headfirst into the vibrant Chicago blues scene. In a short time, he’s made a lasting impression — performing with blues legend Mary Lane and the No-Static Blues Band, and opening for acclaimed acts including Wayne Baker Brooks, and the legendary Buddy Guy.
Paolo’s music has reached audiences on WGN Daytime TV, and he’s graced the stages of iconic venues such as Buddy Guy’s Legends, Harlem Avenue Lounge, Hey Nonny, and Hard Rock Cafe Chicago. Whether solo or backed by a full band, Paolo Apuli brings passion, soul, and authenticity to every stage he steps on.

Marty “Big Dog” Mercer is a Chicago Blues Hall of Fame guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader known for his powerful left-handed style, soulful voice, and towering stage presence. Marty is accompanied by Aiden Dehn on guitar. Aiden normally plays the saxophone in the band.
Performing over 100 shows a year, he delivers high-energy Chicago blues and rock that keeps audiences engaged and singing along. With original music, deep groove, and a warm rapport with crowds, Big Dog Mercer has a strong reputation across the Midwest, from clubs and festivals to theaters and community events. His electrifying stage presence and original sound make every show a true celebration of blues and rock.

Alex Olson is a 15-year-old blues guitarist and vocalist from Oswego, Illinois. He began playing the guitar at the age of 10 and became emersed in the Western Chicagoland blues scene at the age of 11 after attending a local blues jam. Since, he has been navigating the Chicago blues scene taking in all that he can from the many generous musicians he has met along the way. His early influences include Buddy Guy, Freddie King and B.B. King. Alex has a deep passion for the blues and looks forward to carrying on the blues tradition to the next generation.

Knott Us is a Chicago-based band of multicultural youth musicians, known as "The Young Band with An Old Soul," who perform blues, soul, and funk music. The band was formed by the Knotty Luxe Arts Foundation, a non-profit that provides free performing arts education to teens. They recently made their debut at Rosa's Lounge and were selected to represent Chicago at the International Blues Challenge.

Tonight's show will select one band, and a solo/duet to move on to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis (January 13-17 2026). These artists will represent Chicago in an International competition of over 200 musical acts from across the globe. We thank all the supporters of the Chicago Blues Challenge. The moneys raised tonight will benefit the musicians cost to travel to Memphis for the International Competition.

The International Blues Challenge represents the worldwide search for blues bands and solo/duo blues performers ready for the international stage, yet just needing that extra big break. The world’s largest gathering of blues musicians will take place on Beale Street, with over 20 clubs hosting the challengers and fans. In addition to featuring these final rounds of the prestigious blues music competition, the IBC event week will offer seminars, showcases, master classes, film screenings, networking events, book signings, and receptions for blues societies, fans, and professionals.
